Description Enjoy a dozen flamboyant reds that manage to capture the incredible character and fiery spirit of magnificent Spain. These are amazing! There’s Rioja, of course, this one from the renowned Martínez Bujanda, eight years old and drinking beautifully now. More silky aged beauties can be found in a Gold-medal 2017 Tempranillo Gran Reserva from Valdepeñas showing wonderfully fine and elegant fruit, and a delightful Campo de Borja Gran Selección, boasting FOUR Gold and a rare Double Gold. A silky Merlot from Cariñena also delights, and last, you’ve two marvellous Monastrell (aka Mataro) blends, including one from the cult classic Jumilla region, home to “some of the oldest and most concentrated Monastrell in Spain” (Tim Atkin MW, The Observer). Time for some tapas? Most definitely!
A long time favourite, La Cantera is the go-to wine for any fan of smooth, perfectly aged Spanish reds. It gains Reserva status from patient ageing in barrel and bottle, which adds delicious toasty oak notes to its mature ripe red fruits.
Combining concentrated, old bush vine (up to 70 years old) Monastrell (known to us as Mourvèdre or Mataro) plus a portion of strawberry-scented Tempranillo, it’s a lavish and layered wine that’s really hard to resist.
A regular Gold-medal winner (four last vintage), the 2023 Camino de Seda is smooth and brimming with big, spicy red fruit flavours. Ancient bush vines high in Jumilla produce this intensity, complemented by sweet spicy oak in this moreish red.
Enjoy a top-quality Rioja Reserva with seven years’ age It’s from the renowned Finca Valpiedra estate, founded almost 20 years ago by Carlos Martínez Bujanda – royalty in Rioja circles! A complex red with layers of mature berry fruit and spice.
Hailing from Cariñena, neighbour to Rioja, in northeast Spain, picked at peak of ripeness, it's bursting with silky ripe cherry and summer berry fruit.
Valdepeñas in central Spain has long been renowned for the quality of its fine, long-aged, traditional reds. Even so, Raices 2017 is a stand out – a Gran Reserva Tempranillo aged 18 months in French and American oak barrels, now deliciously mellow.
