Description Enjoy a dozen flamboyant reds that manage to capture the incredible character and fiery spirit of magnificent Spain. These are amazing! There’s Rioja, of course (a Rioja Alta no less, from a top estate, dazzling with two Gold and Double Gold!) a gorgeous Gold-medal Garnacha from nearby Navarra (and a sumptuous Navarra Cabernet blend too), two extraordinary multi-Gold 2018 Campo de Borja stars (the lavish Ermita de San Lorenzo Gran Selección has FIVE Gold, whilst the delightful La Bella has EIGHT!), and last, a marvellous Monastrell (aka Mataro) from the cult classic Jumilla region, home to “some of the oldest and most concentrated Monastrell in Spain” (Tim Atkin MW, The Observer). Time for some tapas? Most definitely!
For great value, mature reds, head for Spain. This is a gorgeous mellow Gran Selección from Campo de Borja, using old-vine Garnacha, plus dense Cabernet. Aged for five years in oak, it's gorgeously complex with soft berry spice and savoury length.
Combining concentrated, old bush vine (up to 70 years old) Monastrell (known to us as Mourvèdre or Mataro) plus a portion of strawberry-scented Tempranillo, it’s a lavish and layered wine that’s really hard to resist.
A velvety blend of Garnacha, Syrah and Tempranillo from Spain's Campo de Borja crafted by Scottish-born winemaker Pamela Geddes, with EIGHT Golds including a rare Great Gold and a Double and high scores of 90-92pts.
Trust this terrific family estate and the exciting Navarra region to come up with this cracking red. A Reserva style with five years' age made nearly all from Cabernet Sauvignon, with a touch of fragrant Graciano. Silky fruit with long toasty spice.
From the family winery of Juan Antonio Leza in rarely featured Rioja Alta comes this gorgeous, seductively silky Tempranillo. High vineyards bring freshness to this three-Golds red with its ripe cherry and strawberry fruit notes, unfettered by oak.
This power-packed, old-vine Garnacha is from a winery founded in 1939 in Navarra’s Baja Montaña region. Crafted from the intensely flavoured grapes of ancient, low-yielding vines grown high on a windswept plain, this is a dense, raspberry-rich red.
