Garnacha and Tempranillo combine in a 6-year-old long-time favourite from Cariñena made by Javier Domeque, and Central Spain’s Valdepeñas is home to a 2019 Gran Reserva – pure high-altitude Tempranillo from the 5th generation Castro family. Campo de Borja, with its wealth of old bush vines is home to a trio of superb reds. These include BACCO, a mighty 7-year-old Garnacha of depth, complexity and 6 Golds, and La Bella, a Garnacha, Syrah Tempranillo combo with 8 Golds. Plus there’s a Gran Selección of Garnacha, dense Cabernet and Tempranillo that has delivered a Trophy and 21 Golds in just 7 vintages.
Spain is a superb source of good value, mature reds, but a Gran Reserva Rioja with now 10 years’ age is a top find. Made in a 5-star vintage, it’s from a leading family estate. We can’t say where – our buyer swore secrecy in return for a great price.

El Bombero Gran Reserva is a premium edition of an old favourite, rom Cariñena, a region, synonymous with rich, dark reds and great value, and award-winning winemaker Javier Domeque. This mellow Gran Reserva was aged a full three years in oak.

Valdepeñas in central Spain has long been renowned for the quality of its fine, long-aged, traditional reds. Even so, Raices 2017 is a stand out – a Gran Reserva Tempranillo aged 18 months in French and American oak barrels, now deliciously mellow.
