Description Save $126 on a dozen mighty big, bold, black reds of Southern Italy. Just $19.99 a bottle. Things heat up as you travel further south towards the heel of Italy, and grapes are richly concentrated and velvety smooth. Puglia is home to several ‘big black’ varieties, most notably Primitivo, the velvety grape behind customer favourites like Il Papavero Primitivo, Gold-winning Palumbo – and Pillastro Primitivo (here in a stunning extra-rich anniversary edition). In Sicily, Nostro Posto, and Tenuta Fenice from winemaker Dino Taschetta, offer a cracking taste of dark hero, Nero d’Avola. Lastly, a dramatic red from vines 700 metres high on the volcanic soils of Mt Etna round out the case. Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are the speciality grapes here, noted for power and freshness. Winemaker Filipe Mangione says: “Everything is intense here – nature, volcano, soils and climate” We’d add the wines are too. Enjoy all of the above and save $126.
Puglian Primitivo is seriously fruity, dark and bold, and this, made from 50-year-old-vines is one of the most appealing. Winemaker Scipione Giuliani is the man behind some of our most reordered Poppy wines. Seriously good.
Etna Rosso wines are prized for their wonderful aromatic red fruit, vibrancy and ability to age. This is a terrific red from a tiny cellar, mindful of the environment and devoted to their wines. Gentle red fruit, wild herbs, minerality and freshness.
Sicily is an island with a big heart – families coming together to make wine that they're truly proud of, like this seductive Sicilian red from the island's black hero grape.
This rich, barrel-aged Nero d'Avola is a tribute to Dino Taschetta's grandfather and his vineyard. An earthquake struck in 1968 and the vines were abandoned until Dino nursed them back to life. Now the grapes make this rich, blackberry-spiced red.
Winemaker Leonardo Palumbo is so proud of this delicious juicy red that he’s put his name on the label. Crafted using a blend of three premium Puglian grapes – Nero di Troia, Negroamaro and Primitivo – he’s made a velvety, dark, spice-infused wine.
This special anniversary edition was originally made to mark 25 years of our No.1 Italian red, Pillastro. It proved so popular, we've continued to make it since. Berry-rich, sweet-spiced, oak-aged Pillastro, with extra richness.
