From top estates in Rioja enjoy a 2016 Single Vineyard Reserva and a silky Crianza. The Gran Selección from Valencia and Campo de Borja boast 2 Trophies and over 35 Golds between them in 10 years; and there’s yet more Gold with a 95pt Cabernet rule-breaker from Navarra and mighty El Bombero Gran Reserva.
This is an excellent collection of perfectly-matured, silky reds of power, personality and great finesse – a speciality of Spain.
Lovers of mature Rioja will recognise the red berry and oak character of this terrific value Gran Selección gem from Valencia. It’s been wowing wine judges for years and was skilfully crafted by a winery regularly tipped by Spanish wine guide, Peñín.
With many wines ranked over 90 points, Bodegas La Emperatriz is one of Rioja's finest estates. This is their seductively long, complex 8-year-old Gran Reserva from a remarkably high single vineyard, just beginning to show at its best. Savour slowly.
First vintage of this fine Crianza Rioja. It’s from Juan Antonio Leza’s bodega in the premium, elevated subregion of Rioja Alta. Made exclusively from high-grown Tempranillo grapes and aged in oak barriques, it’s brimming with ripe berry fruit.
In the 7 vintages we’ve seen of this beauty, it's delivered a Trophy and 21 Golds (5 of them Doubles). A gorgeous mellow Gran Selección from Campo de Borja, using old-vine Garnacha, plus dense Cabernet and Tempranillo.
Rioja's neighbour Navarra has always been a bit of a renegade, pioneering region. It embraces Cabernet Sauvignon for starters. This is a fabulous, Gold, 95pt red with Napa-style richness, ripe blackcurrant fruit and a flattering touch of oak.
El Bombero Gran Reserva is a premium edition of a decades-old favourite from Cariñena's award-winning veteran winemaker Javier Domeque. This rich, dark red is packed with rich berries and spicy complexity that is perfect with roast lamb and game.
