Cool climate Sangiovese from Victoria's Pyrenees region and 5 star-rated Taltarni set up by the Goelet family, founders of Clos du Val in Napa Valley back in 1972.
John Lehmann writing in The Australian: "Taltarni’s senior winemaker, Ben Howell, reckons sangiovese can be a joyful discovery precisely because it of its everyman qualities. “If people like cabernets then it's nice and structural without being over the top, and if people like a good pinot then it's not too far of a step away from some of the bolder pinots,” Ben tells us.“I find if we take this to a festival or an event like that, where we're up against some really big cabernets on the day or some really fruitful shirazes, then this shines as a wine with a bit of everything." John adds a further tasting note: "The dark ruby colour is a pretty good harbinger of the cherry and juby fruits on the nose, washed through with vanilla, clove and almond. There’s more cherry in the mouth with cocoa and aniseed in a savoury finish – the mouthwatering acidity and balanced tannins complement each other like Simon & Garfunkel in their prime."
