Description
Enjoy a 93pt, Great Value Cab. blend with “… a cavalcade of ripe berries and mulberry, dark chocolate and fruitcake spices, along with lifted green peppercorn, thyme and bay. It’s full and expressive…” (Halliday) from the Salomon estate in Southern Fleurieu.
The estate is owned by an Austrian winemaker (the 8th generation of a dynasty behind the very highly regarded Salomon Undhof) who, after falling in love with the region, moved his family to Adelaide in the 1980s. They now split their time between running this estate, and his estate in the premium Austrian region of Kremstal, close to Vienna. Ex-Penfolds' Mark Familo, a friend of the estate, consults and Simon White (ex. Coriole) looks after things in his absence.
John Lehmann writing in The Australian, recommends Dark Pearl: "Take a moment to savour this – first the complex nose offering blackberry, tomato leaf and blackcurrant, menthol and green capsicum, even some choc-mint. Then a palate that’s velvety and full-bodied, soaked in roasted meats and pan juices balanced by blackcurrant and cassis, with soft tannins and a smooth finish."
