Description
Savour a very attractive 94pt Syrah Viognier from the Salomon estate in Southern Fleurieu.
The estate is owned by an Austrian winemaker (the 8th generation of a dynasty behind the very highly regarded Salomon Undhof) who, after falling in love with the region, moved his family to Adelaide in the 1980s. They now split their time between running this estate, and his estate in the premium Austrian region of Kremstal, close to Vienna. Ex-Penfolds' Mark Familo, a friend of the estate, consults and Simon White (ex. Coriole) looks after things in his absence.
For Tony Love, WinePilot: "While it’s generously proportioned with palate drive and power, the overall shape of the wine is delightfully sensuous, the tannins ethereal. A most satisfying southern hemisphere reflection of a classic French style. 94pts."
"Well, 7.5% Viognier certainly lifts the floral notes of the bouquet and takes its vibrant colour right through to the rim. It is an opulent, fleshy wine that coats every corner of the mouth, not for the first time outside the more elegant restraint of some of its siblings. 94pts" (James Halliday, The Halliday Wine Companion).
